Battle Creek has something for riders of all technical abilities, with trails running the gamut from smooth, hard-pack ski trails to expert-level singletrack. More details on MORC's website. Please e-mail if you intend to be there in case of cancellation (to protect the trails we do not ride if the conditions are wet). Bring water and bug dope. Sunday, August 30   DAY TRIP
St. Croix Day Paddle. End of summer paddle. You must have your own boat and/or partner. Use the e-group if you are lacking in one or the other. Leave the cities at 8:30 a.m. and carpool 1–1.5 hours to put in at Rush City Ferry Landing. The trip length will be about 10 miles and should take most of the day. We will stop along the river's sandbars and swim and relax and look for a scenic spot to eat lunch. Bring appropriate clothing and bring enough beverages and food of your choice for the trip down the river. In addition, people frequently want to go out for a meal after the paddle. Detailed directions, carpool information, etc. will be sent to those who express interest. Please include your phone and cell phone number. If you need a paddle partner, send an e-mail to the Rovers e-group. If you need to borrow a boat from the cage, contact Rob C.

Friday – Sunday, July 24 – July 26
Trail Clearing on the Border Route. This will be a trail clearing trip to the Pigeon River Cliffs Section of the Border Route Trail located out of Grand Marais, MN. Trip highlights will include scenic vistas from the bluffs overlooking the Pigeon River valley, great food, camaraderie that can't be surpassed, plus the chance to see wildlife such as loons, black bear, moose, and fox. This is a great opportunity to experience some of the best scenery in the Upper Midwest and at the same time feel good about giving something back for all of the times that you've hiked or skied on well maintained trails.

Activities include doing a maintenance and flagging sweep from Portage Brook east past the overlooks along the Pigeon River Ridge to the connection with the Superior Hiking Trail at the Swamp River. Tools will include chain saws and power brush cutters (sort of a glorified weed whipper) as well as hand operated limbers. For those preferring to keep their distance from the power equipment, there will be plenty of opportunities such as flagging, throwing brush and deadfall pieces, limbing, etc. We'll also make sure that we get back to camp early enough for a swim in Otter Lake before dinner.

Our base camp will consist of car camping at the Otter Lake Access Trailhead primitive campsite located on Otter Lake just off the Arrowhead Trail / Cook Cty 16 out of Hovland, MN. Amenities include a lake to swim in, the possibility of tango on the bedrock, and a BWCAW style privy. There is no running water, but we'll bring enough to supply the group for the weekend. Bring your your personal gear and between meal snacks, we provide all meals and community gear such as stoves, cooking pots, and all trail maintenance gear. Contact the trip coordinator for a copy of the summer mechanized trail clearing equipment list for details on what personal gear to bring.

This trip is open to beginners but bear in mind that you should be in good physical condition with prior camping experience being an asset. We provide OJT for those new to trail clearing and those desiring to get the feel of running a brushcutter. Those using the chain saws must be USFS certified.

We'll depart from across the street from the Roseville REI at 6:15 p.m. on Friday and return at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. Because this is a volunteer service trip, you need not be a member of Rovers to participate. Estimated cost: $49 (tax deductible and includes transportation and meals, except for stops on the way up and back). Deposit: $49. Max trip size: 12.

We'll be traveling through a combination of the Man Chain and the Falls Chain; two of the prettiest areas in the park. You'll be responsible for all of your own food and gear. Sunday, July 19    DAY TRIP
Day Hike & Pizza Eating. Hiking, exploring, excellent food, and great company. Leave from the Sun Ray Shopping Center, 2165 Hudson Road East, St. Paul at 10:30 a.m. sharp, for a scenic drive to Menomonie, WI and the Red Cedar State Trail. Sun Ray is located on the north side of I94 on the east of downtown St. Paul between the Ruth St. and McKnight Rd exits.

We'll hike from Menomonie to Irvington and back, a total distance of 5.4 miles along the flowing waters of the Red Cedar and the rock outcroppings that define the rugged character of this section of trail. In this case, the term rugged is relative as trail follows the roadbed of an abandoned 1882 Milwaukee Road rail line so rugged pertains to the nature of your surroundings and not to the hike itself. We'll have an opportunity for a refreshment break in Irvington.

After we've finished our hike, we'll stop to take a look at the Devil’s Punchbowl and then head down to the Nelson Stone Barn for gourmet pizza. With luck we'll catch the sunset over Lake Pepin on our way back to Sun Ray. We'll carpool using my 15-passenger Dodge Maxi-Van. We expect to be back sometime between 8:30 and 10:00 p.m., but there are a variety of timing issues that we do not have control over such as how long we devote to hiking and seeing the Devil's Punchbowl, and how long the wait will be at the Stone Barn. If you have time constraints, please do not sign up as we do not want to miss either the hiking or the pizza. Estimated cost: $5. Deposit: $5. Max trip size: 15.

Saturday, July 18  DAY TRIP — BEGINNER SERIES
Beginner Mountain Biking — Part 2. In the second part of the beginner mountain bike series we'll cover more technical terrain at Murphy Hanrahan Park Reserve. Meet at 2:00 p.m., in the parking area. Before we saddle up, we'll go over some basics of mountain biking equipment, technique, and etiquette.

The beginner plus the intermediate loops combined are ~3.25 miles, then there’s 5-6 miles of advanced. We’ll decide amongst the group if we want to do one or more laps of the easier stuff and then gauge interest in checking out the advanced loop if it’s not terribly busy (we don't want to be in anybody’s way when walking over obstacles we're not comfortable riding). If people are up for it, it would be fun to do the advanced loop to see what kinds of things you can expect on an advanced loop.

HELMETS REQUIRED! Gloves and protective eyewear are highly recommended. Bug dope may be a good idea as well. Please read the trail description on MORC's website prior to this activity. This is also where you will find directions to the trail head.

Saturday, February 21    DAY TRIP
Snowshoe Day Hike. The Superior Hiking Trail Assn (SHTA) offers many guided group day hikes each year along the Superior Hiking Trail along Minnesota's North Shore. These hikes offer a safe way to explore various sections of the Trail with others. This guided snowshoe hike covers 4.2 mi on the Knife River section of the Superior Hiking Trail and will be lead by a SHTA member who will give an orientation and briefing of the trail section prior to the start of the hike. Shuttles will be coordinated at the hike's start for this point-to-point hike. All SHTA guided hikes are open to the public at no cost, however, you may want to visit the SHTA website at SHTA.org and consider joining the non-profit SHTA which manages and maintains the entire Trail with the help of volunteers.

There is no maximum number of hikers, no fee and no deposit required. The hike could be described as an intermediate level snowshoe hike and it will alternate between the tops of high banks and riverside trail sections. No equipment rental is available, you must provide your own fluids and food, and hikes are held irregardless of weather conditions, so dress appropriately. The hike should last 3-4 hours.

The hike will begin at 10:00 am at the following location: from Hwy 61 milepost 18.2 (between Duluth and Two Harbors) turn right onto CR 103 (Knife River Rd), go .3 miles to Scenic (old) Hwy 61, turn right and go .25 mi to the parking lot past the bridge on the River. I have participated and coordinate many of these hikes and they are a fun, safe, and educational way to explore the Trail and surrounding area. Estimated cost: $0. Deposit: $0. Max trip size: no limit.

Saturday, February 14     DAY TRIP
Celebrate Your Friends — Snow Tubing at Elm Creek Park Reserve. Originally scheduled as a Candlelight Ski at Fort Snelling State Park, plans have been revised due to ice and standing water. New plans are as follows: Snow tubing at Elm Creek Park Reserve at 4:30 p.m. The snow tubing hill has a base of 3 feet and has been minimally affected by the warm weather, except for the closings due to wet/sloppy conditions. We shouldn't have any problems by Saturday, since the weather will be turning colder again (although, it may be icy). Meet at the chalet/visitor center at 4:15 p.m. to get your pass and sign a waiver. The pass for two hours of tubing is $12 (when we get there and know how many of us there are, we can check into group rates that can take off a couple of dollars per person). We'll tube from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

After tubing, we will head over to Champps' in Maple Grove for dinner/socializing. We can caravan to Champps', but we will also have maps available. For those who don't want to go tubing, you are welcome to join us for dinner. Just let one of us know so that we can call Champps' ahead of time with the number of tables we will need. There is no fee for the entrance into the park.

Estimated cost: $12 tubing + $dinner. Max trip size: unlimited.

Cross-Country Ski/Snowshoe. Staying in a two-bedroom cabin at Acorn Hill Resort. Jane and I are goin to cross country ski and snowshoe. But each of us can do anything that we want or just hang out. I was told by Acorn Hill Resort that they used a three-bedroom cabin as a two-bedroom cabin in winter. There are two bunk beds and a sofa bed available. There is a fully equpped kitchen for us to cook meals or we can go out to eat. If we decide cook together for some meals, I will be happy to do prep before trip, and split cost among us. I can make a killer Whole-Wheat Fusilli with Beef Ragu. You do need to bring your own towel, otherwise the cabin is fully equpped, according to Acorn Hill Resort. Please contact me first for availability and address to send deposit. We will settle the balance before the end of trip. Estimated cost: approximately $85 per person if total 4 persons; $112 per person if total 3 persons. Even lower if 5 or 6 persons. Deposit: $85. Max trip size: 6.

Cross-Country Ski & Snowshoe. We have rustic cabins at Tettegouche State Park for Presidents Day Weekend and Valentines Day — two cabins, a total of 12 people. Leave Friday Morning, return Monday evening. You can read about Tettegouche Camp (click on link, see page 2): It's really a cool place! Old wood cabins, propane heated to 40 degrees, wood stove to bring up temp to comfy level. Cook stove-but No running water - yet there is a heated shower/toilet building on the property. There is also a log building "lodge" used for common space/gathering. The hike in is a hilly one and one-half mile hike. Depending on snow conditions-you can ski in, snowshoe in, or usually hike on packed snow. We will haul in gear in backpacks and small sleds. Ski trails are not for beginners. The cabins are right on the ski trail. There is great x-country skiing up there-and/or great snowshoeing! My first priority will be for people who have never been there. Exceptions will be made for 1) two people who are willing to take care of menu planning and shopping and 2) drivers. Looking for 4 more non-snoring people, and 6 people who can sleep in a room with people who might snore. Meet at REI - Roseville at 8:00 a.m., returning 6;00 p.m. Estimated cost: $150, including transportation. Deposit: $60. Max trip size: 12.
