I grew up spending all my time outside on the Iowa farm. We always looked forward to our semi-annual road trip to Upper Michigan to see my grandparents, where we’d get to spend two weeks wandering in the woods and playing in Lake Superior. It wasn’t until I moved to Minnesota that I found out water could be warmer than 50 degrees.

In college I took up mountain biking and serious hiking. A few years later I moved to the Twin Cities. Not knowing anyone in town, I found a fateful Rovers brochure at REI, checked out a meeting, and a few weeks later, was on a beginner backpacking trip to the Superior Hiking Trail. I was hooked. I loved how welcoming everyone was, and how much knowledge the group had on so many different activities. I soon met the wonderful woman who is now my wife on a beginner Boundary Waters trip, and we’ve both stayed active in the club ever since. Now my closest network of (OK, only) friends are past or present Rovers members.

Since then, Rovers have helped me take up rock climbing, kayaking, wilderness canoeing, downhill skiing, and skate skiing. The biggest problem I have now is finding time to do everything! The one problem I don’t have is finding great people to do it with.
