    2017 Rovers Astronomy Weekend — Wildcat Mountain State Park, Wisconsin

    SAVE THE DATE!! Join us for the third annual Rovers Astronomy Weekend at beautiful Wildcat Mountain state park near Ontario, WI. During the day, we will hike around the park, bird watch from the viewpoints, bike along the nearby Sparta Elroy trail and do another group paddle down the Kickapoo river. At night, our friends from the Minnesota Astronomical Society and the Northwest Suburban Astronomers from Chicago will show us the night sky through large telescopes… so Save The Date!! Registration starts Feb. 19.

    Duncan Lake 1 — Border Route trail, Minnesoata

    Thursday evening, May 11th, the crew will drive up to a bunkhouse or ranger cabin and stay overnight. Friday the crew will paddle from the “West” Bearskin landing to a campsite on Duncan Lake (includes a 1/4 mile portage), setup a base camp and spend the rest of the day trail clearing on the BRT and trail clearing will continue on Saturday.

    A Birding Walk at Snail Lake Regional Park which is located in Shoreview (55126) at 4191 Snail Lake Blvd. Take 694 to Victoria exit (exit 43B). North on Victoria 0.5 mile, past Gramsie Rd to Snail Lake Blvd. Right on Snail Lake Blvd. Continue on Snail Lake Blvd. past large parking lot on left. After road curves, take a left into the second parking lot by the lake. No experience is required, but experienced birders are welcome and encouraged to come and help. Meet at 6 pm.

    Border Route Trail Clearing — Topper Lake, MN

    Early Friday, April 28th, the morning the crew will drive up to the access trail head, hike into the Topper Lake camp, setup a base camp, and spend the rest of the day trail clearing on the BRT. to the west of the camp. Saturday and Sunday trail clearing will continue on the BRT. The crew will hike out on Monday and return home.

At the light on 24th Avenue (extension of Old Shakopee Rd) and 86th Street, turn east one block to a one lane gravel road (that means go straight) for about 70 yards to the parking area. No experience is required, but experienced birders are welcome and encouraged to come and help

    Yep, Rovers are headed to Deep Portage again. Join us at Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center in Hackensack (north of Brainerd) for a pleasant, carefree weekend of winter fun. Activities include skiing (11 miles of groomed trails for traditional cross-country), snowshoeing, ice fishing (you just need your license), climbing wall, stargazing from the fire tower, reading or socializing by the fireplace with a glass of wine, enjoying the outdoor campfire ring.

    North Shore Trek — Cook County, MN

    I have skied the past two North Shore Treks and am registered this year for the March 3-8 North Shore Trek. I estimate skiing 100 km in the first 2 1/2 days, followed by a day of rest (with great ski trails available), then 40 km from Bearskin Lodge to Gunflint Lodge. We could use people to shuttle cars who don’t want to ski the full distance each day.

    Oriental Bittersweet Hunt — Elm Creek Park Reserve, MN

    Join Three Rivers Park District’s battle against Oriental Bittersweet, an invasive vine, by participating in an “Invasive Blitz” at Elm Creek Park Reserve on Saturday, February 25! We will be hiking off-trail on uneven terrain in areas usually off-limits to the public. We’ll be looking for the brightly-colored red berries of the vine from Noon until 3 p.m.

    Arriving on Friday at 6:00 pm at Main Street Cafe in downtown Bloomer, WI (dinner on your own). After dinner, we leave for my cabin near New Auburn WI. Saturday, cross-country skiing at the Blue Hills, downhill skiing at the Christie Mountain ski area which is nearby, or snowshoe at the Chippewa Ice Age Interpretive Center. Sunday –cross-country ski at Hickory Ridge.

    Bayfield Skiing and Snowshoeing — Bayfield, Wisconsin

    Join us for 2 or 3 days of cross country skiing and/or snowshoeing, watch the start of a dog sled race, and if Lake Superior is frozen we will go to the ice caves and drive out to Madeline Island. We are in an old bed and breakfast (which has a 4-person sauna) that Seagull Bay Motel bought. It overlooks Lake Superior and you can snowshoe from the motel. There are also five motel rooms that we will be occupying. Four spots will be saved for new Rovers (joined in 2016) until Dec. 31st.

Come & join us over a series of day trips, as we explore portions of this National Park that is right in our back yards! First in the series will be a hike at Coldwater Spring. Sunday, January 22, 1- 3 PM. Join us as we explore this historic site, which was the camp for the soldiers who built Fort Snelling. We will walk through the interpretive site & then hike to Fort Snelling and /or explore the woods around the park & the river and return via the Mississippi River Trail.

    Winter Trails Day @ Fort Snelling State Park! — Beach Area - 101 Snelling Lake Road, St. Paul, Minnesota

    Get outside to celebrate and enjoy winter! REI experts, Fort Snelling State Park and local outdoor organizations will provide free activities that show how fun winter can be. Activities include: snowshoeing, cross country skiing, skijoring, ice fishing, ice sculpting, naturalist guided hikes, traditional ice harvesting, winter camping info, learn to build a quinzee (like an igloo made of snow). VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Minnesota Rovers will once again assist REI and Fort Snelling staff with free activities that showcase how much fun winter can be!  We will be staffing the snowshoe area from 11am - 4pm.
