    Wilderness First Aid Training — Edina (Sun.), (Sat. TBD), Minnesota

    Take a Wilderness First Aid Class in November. The Instructor is Tom O’Neal. Tom has a wealth of experience as a First Responder and WFA instructor for Boy Scouts and various outdoor groups. He does ski patrol and bike patrol at a wide range of events. The class will cover how to manage medical situations that arise more than an hour from assistance, particularly in wilderness situations.

    Octoberfest Hiking or Biking — Stillwater, MN

    ​To celebrate Octoberfest we will hike or bike from the Bavarian Gasthaus Hunter Restaurant parking lot to the Brown’s Creek State Trail a block away and go for about an hour out and then return to the restaurant. Those that choose can join us in an Octoberfest German meal or desert. For bicycling the intent is to take the Brown’s Creek Trail to Stillwater and the new St. Croix river bridge.

    Non-Mechanized Trail Clearing on Border Route — Border Route Trail, MN

    ​Interested in working on the Border Route trail but cannot use a chain saw? Thursday evening (October 12th) the crew will drive up to Heston’s Lodge on Gunflint Lake and stay overnight in cabins. Friday the crew will hike in to the BRT on the Crab Lake Spur trail and clear west to the western BWCAW boundary and return to Heston’s Lodge.

    Boats, Bikes, Boots, and Beer: Canal Boating in England — Cheshire, England

    This is a two-week canal boat trip in the county of Cheshire, in west central England, near the Welsh border. The canal boat will be our moving base of operations, a sort of floating RV with a kitchen, bathrooms, showers and bedrooms. Each day we will cruise down the canal, through the lovely English countryside, for about 4-5 hours, leaving us six to eight hours each day to explore scenic villages, ancient castles and churches, and dramatic overlooks.

    We are planning to bike the Willard Munger Trail on Saturday August 12. We would like to do the section from Carlton to Duluth with a side trip to Jay Cooke State Park. This section is about 15 miles with a slightly downhill grade. We could bike out and back or shuttle cars to the end of the trail.

    Canoeing and Kayaking — Clearwater, MN

    Join Cathy and Kris on a canoeing and kayaking day trip on the upper Mississippi River on Saturday, August 5. We will meet in Clearwater, MN (about an hour’s drive from the Twin Cities, off of Interstate 94) at 11 am to put in at Clear Waters Outfitting. We will paddle about 8 miles down river, enjoying a seldom seen part of the Mississippi, taking out at Snuffy’s Landing. We intend to stop to swim and snack at least once or twice - there are a number of nice sandbars along this stretch of the river. This is a family friendly and beginner friendly trip.

    I am planning a trip to Bayfield for the weekend of July 21-23. I will rent the house that Rovers use in the winter and have room for 6-10 people depending on the mix of singles/couples. There should be biking on Madeline Island, but people are free to do whatever activities they enjoy-hiking, kayaking, shopping, wine tasting. Bayfield has a lot going on in the summertime.

Ingredients/recipes should be appropriate for the backcountry. Recipes should take 30 minutes or fewer to prepare and require only a single-burner stove.

    Bicycle Ride to Minneopa State Park and on the Red Jacket Trail — MANKATO, MN

    This casual bike ride will be about 27 miles. From the West High School parking lot in Mankato, we will bike to Minneopa Falls and do a very short hike to the falls. From there we will take a trail to the Red Jacket Bridge. After a brief stop, we will continue to Rapidan and then to Dam Store for pie and/or lunch. The return trip will be on the Red Jacket Trail.

    Hiking, Bison Watching, Rock Climbing, Bicycling and Paddling in SW MN & SE South Dakota — Palisades State Park, South Dakota

    A trifecta of state park fun! Palisades SP (SD) has pink quartzite bluffs overlooking the rushing water of Split Rock Creek. Less than 25 minutes away are Blue Mounds SP, the city of Luverne (home of Bradenburg Gallery and Take 16 Brewing), Split Rock Creek SP, and the Sioux Falls Bike Trail. Palisades SP offers beautiful views, bluffs for rock climbing, and Split Rock Creek for whitewater paddling. Blue Mounds SP offers bison watching and 13 miles of hiking trails past quartzite cliffs, tallgrass prairie, and prickly pear cacti. Split Rock Creek SP offers paddling on Split Rock Lake (Boats available for rent) and another 4.5 miles of hiking. For bikers, Sioux Falls has a 26 mile paved trail around the city outskirts.

    I have skied the past two North Shore Treks and am registered this year for the March 3-8 North Shore Trek. I estimate skiing 100 km in the first 2 1/2 days, followed by a day of rest (with great ski trails available), then 40 km from Bearskin Lodge to Gunflint Lodge.     Bayfield Skiing and Snowshoeing — Bayfield, Wisconsin

    Join us for 2 or 3 days of cross country skiing and/or snowshoeing, watch the start of a dog sled race, and if Lake Superior is frozen we will go to the ice caves and drive out to Madeline Island. We are in an old bed and breakfast (which has a 4-person sauna) that Seagull Bay Motel bought. It overlooks Lake Superior and you can snowshoe from the motel. There are also five motel rooms that we will be occupying. Four spots will be saved for new Rovers (joined in 2016) until Dec. 31st.
