- Max Trip Size: 25 people
Do you want to plant native MN plants in your garden? Or just a nice winter activity with kids? Winter sowing is a technique for starting seedlings outdoors even in our temperate climate. Most seeds will work, even annuals like tomatoes. Some seeds even need that 60 days of cold weather to wake up in spring. (Can relate.)
I’ll walk you through setting up your mini-greenhouses, and you’ll take them home for your garden. While this is a family-friendly activity, any Rover is welcome to show up, with or without children. Grandparents/aunts/uncles/outdoor mentors are also welcome in addition to parents. As a Rovers day trip, any adult who attends must be a Rover member or sign a waiver. Any minors who attend must be under the supervision of an adult who is a member or has signed the waiver.
I’ll run this activity open house style – you don’t need to show up right at noon to participate. Please RSVP to my email so I know how many supplies to buy. When you RSVP, I’ll send you the address. I will provide potting soil and tools. More details about the winter sowing process are at the link below – or send me questions. 🙂
Materials for you to bring:
Seeds you want to germinate (find a local garden store or I like Seed Savers Exchange for online shopping)
Plastic container(s) that: 1) you can poke holes in, 2) will let some light in, and 3) is at least 4 inches tall (I will have a few spare containers just in case)
