Conservation–Buckthorn beat back — Murphy-Hanrehan Park, Minnesota

Sat, 6:00am - 9:00amOct 212017
  • Max Trip Size: 50 people
Description:

Come join the fun, exhilaration, and sense of accomplishment by removing buckthorn from a woodlot at Murphy-Hanrehan Park. This woodlot was identified as a high quality forest community by the Three Rivers Park district, but with a developing invasion of buckthorn. In 2014, the woodlot was adopted as a focus area to retain the area’s quality by removing buckthorn. Its quality is reflected by the number of taxa/species documented using the area to date: 110 species of plants, 20 species of mushrooms, 66 species of birds, 12 species of mammals, 7 amphibians, 2 reptiles, and over 50 invertebrates. To date, removal has included about 90 percent of buckthorn with diameters greater than 1 inch, 70 percent of saplings, and 50 percent of seedlings up to 2 feet in height. Come help remove buckthorn in areas of concentration where native plants are most affected by competition with buckthorn. Besides, this is a great time of year to be in the woods. Wear boots for possibly muddy sections of trail, work gloves, hat, and layers for cooler weather, and bring water.
