Canoeing West Bearskin Lake to Gunflint — Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

Category: Hiking, Summer Trips, Camping, Paddling

Fri - TueJul 17 - Jul 212015
  • Estimated Cost: $85
  • Deposit: $35
  • Max Trip Size: 9 people
Description:

This trip begins on Thursday, 16 July, by carpooling to Cascade River State Park to camp overnight. On Friday, we will drive to West Bearskin Lake and launch before canoeing through it, Duncan, Rose, Rat, South, and North Lakes to Gunflint Lake before beginning our return, with a complimentary west wind at our backs. We will camp our last evening in the BWCA on Sunday and exit on Monday (20 July) for the return home. If time permits, we may include a hike along the Border Route, looking over Rose Lake and into Canada. There will be a total of 6 easy to moderate portages each way with distances as follows 81, 78, 8, 79, 79 and 12 rods (1 rod = the normal size ox goad = 16.5 feet = 5.029 meters). We wish to keep pack weights light while maintaining enjoyable meals—fun to watch being prepared if not to eat. No fresh produce, liquid attitude adjustment, or bowling balls will be permitted while in the BWCA. Sharing tents will be promoted; a half Duluth pack for personal gear; don’t even ask about kayaks. Getting on the water by 9am on mornings while in the BWCA is expected. Some canoeing and camping experience will be useful. Physical demand is considered moderate. This is a gender and age neutral trip—that is, either and all are welcome.
