Let’s do an “ice hike” of 4.5 miles around much of the Voyageur Trek Trail at Lebanon Hills Wednesday starting at Noon Sharp. Let’s expect roughly half or more of the trail to be solid, wavy ice, at times up or down, the rest ranging from hard packed snow down to bare ground and dirt. But let’s discover that it’s a nice hike because we’re wearing some better traction devices on our hiking shoes.
We’ll leave from the Holland Lake trail head parking lot and head out to the northern segment, then circle around while passing O’Brian Lake, Cattail Pond, Lily Pond, Bridge Pond, Beaver Pond, the east end of Jensen Lake, and part of Dakota Lake.
Shoe grippers/traction devices on your hiking shoes will be mandatory. Those with just coiled springs on the bottom will not be adequate. (Don’t even think of using snowshoes on these trails these days.) The lumpy ice will often be unavoidable and at times will go uphill or downhill, either of which will yield to taking a little care. Yet most of the time we’ll just be crunching along, planning on a pleasant 2.5 – 3 mph pace, stopping now and then to enjoy the quiet of the woods of our “Wilderness in the City”, perhaps too to look and listen for birds.
Dress warm—it could be windy and 15 degrees at the start. Consider bringing water. Bathrooms are available at the trailhead. Please be ready to hike on time.
All dogs on leashes are welcome (the ones I’ve seen at Lebanon Hills recently seem to do fine). Please text or email me if you’re planning to come, whether you’re a member or not. IN ADDITION, if you’re not a Rover, please sign the release below.
