Join Three River Park District’s battle against the invasive vine Oriental Bittersweet by participating in an “Invasive Blitz” at Elm Creek Park Reserve! Meet at the Eastman Nature Center at Elm Creek at 12:00 noon. We will be hiking off-trail on uneven terrain in areas usually off-limits to the public. We’ll be looking for the brightly-colored red berries of the vine from 12:30 – 3:30 or so, then head back to the Eastman Nature Center afterward for a hot beverage. We may be asked to use handsaws to remove the bittersweet, if time provides. (For birders: We may see birds such as shrikes and owls, so bring your binoculars.)
Dress for the weather and the work (comfortable, sturdy, warm boots or snowshoes with snow pants and layered clothing). Bring water and a snack, if desired. (Eastman rents snowshoes if you want to rent them.) Must be 8 or older to participate. Youths must be accompanied by an adult and must have a permission form filled out. General information and the youth permission form are available on the Invasive Species Removal Event page of Three Rivers Park District’s website. Non-members are welcome on all day trips, so bring a friend!
Estimated cost: $0. Max trip size: No limit. The more, the merrier!
