This paddling adventure is located right in our own backyard. The Mississippi River is the longest river in the U.S. and its character changes more as it flows thru the Twin Cities than in any other area, so unique that it is designated a National River and Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service.
Although this is not a difficult paddle, it is NOT a beginners trip. According to the DNR, this segment of the Mississippi requires some paddling skills in order to avoid snags, sweepers, and boulders, large wakes from boats and barges and because the current can be deceptively swift.
You are responsible to find your own paddling partner, if needed, and to transport your own boat. Please check with the Rovers’ cage coordinators for availability of canoes and kayaks. We’ll meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Snelling State Park boat launch on the Minnesota River, paddling around Pike Island, and then head upstream on the Mississippi, lock thru Lock and Dam #1 at the Ford Bridge and continue for about 1 hour before turning back. We’ll stop for a late lunch after the paddle.
Directions to Fort Snelling State Park: From Hwy 5 by the airport, take the Post Road exit and enter the park at the stone gate. Follow the main road approx. 2 miles. Follow the signs to the boat launch. A yearly ($25) or daily ($5) Minnesota State Park pass is required for entry.
