Biking — Custer, SD

Category: Bicycling

Sun - FriMay 31 - Jun 52026
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

Join me for bicycle ride along the Mickelson rail trail in South Dakota. This is a beautiful ride through the Black Hills on a crushed limestone and gravel trail. The grade rarely exceeds 4%. I am told that 36 mm wide tires are sufficient.

We will drive to Custer where we will stay overnight and leave our cars. Then on successive days bike 57 mi to Deadwood, back to Custer, 50 mi to Edgemont, and then again back to Custer. We will stay in hotels in Deadwood and Edgemont and  a campground in Custer.

Participants will be responsible for their own lodging reservations and shared fuel. Since we will eat at restaurants and stay at hotels, we will only need to carry snacks, water, lunch, biking gear, and hotel necessities.  This should include what you need to repair a flat tire and gear to keep off any rain.  Though this is a minimal amount of gear, your bicycle needs to be able to carry it safely.
