It’s back! For many years Rovers have made an annual trek to Gooseberry Falls State Park for the Gitchi Gami Trail Annual Bike Ride on the third Saturday in August. Suspended during COVID years, the trip is returning this year! This is a supported bike ride by the Gitchi Gami Trail Association, starting at Gooseberry Falls and continuing to Silver Bay. And there’s so much more to this weekend – hiking, paddling, bicycling (new addition is mountain biking trails at nearby Split Rock State Park), swimming, or just lounging by the lake shore. We will be at the Pebble Creek campsite, the closest to the Lake Superior shore. The campsite has a vault toilet and drinking water is available in the parking lot. There are no showers or electricity. (The shower and bathrooms in the nearby lower campground are closed for repairs for the summer season).
Parking is shared with two other group sites and is very limited. Only 8 spots are allowed. Parking preference will be given to those who carpool. The rest of us will have to park a quarter mile north at the picnic area parking lot. A Minnesota parks pass is required to enter the park ($7/day or $35/year). EV charging is available at the Visitors’ Center.
Group size is limited to 20 people. Reservation cost is $17, which includes the campsite and firewood. Additional costs for the GGTrail Ride, gas, food, etc. Meals are on your own except for a pot-luck dinner on FRIDAY night (not Saturday, let’s go out!) Please bring a bear-safe container for your food, or keep it in a car.
You must be a current member to sign up for this trip and your membership must be current at the time of the trip. 4 spots will be reserved for NEW (never been a member) Rovers until August 1st.
Group gear will include 5 gallon water jug, stove and fuel, water kettle, coffee pot and dish-washing gear. Coffee will be included (but no one wants me making coffee!) Please bring your own additions for coffee.
