Backpacking — Isle Royale National Park, MI

Trip Full Wait List OpenCategory: Hiking, Camping

Fri - ThuSep 13 - Sep 192019
  • Estimated Cost: $325
  • Deposit: $30
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

Join your Rover friends for backpacking in Isle Royale National Park. We will spend 6 days and 5 nights on the island hiking from Rock Harbor to Windigo.  We will be covering 8-12 miles per day, primarily along the Greenstone Ridge Trail.

Important Notes:

  1. This is not a beginner hike. Only experienced backpackers who can hike 15 miles a day with a heavy pack will be accepted.
  2. There are few ways to get off the island early, so backpacking experience and preparation are critical.
  3. Plan to carry 6 days of food, as there is no place to resupply once the hike begins.

We will drive to Grand Portage on Friday, Sep 13 and camp in Grand Portage.  The boat leaves early for the island on Saturday morning, arriving in Rock Harbor mid-afternoon.  We will take the boat from Windigo to Grand Portage on Thursday, Sep 19 and drive home that evening.

Estimate Cost of $325 includes boat travel, permits, and camping one night in Grand Portage.  Most of the costs will be paid directly by the participants and food will be on your own.
