Join us for a moderately paced out and back 4-mile hike along the scenic St Croix River. Afterwards you can join us for lunch at the historic Fort Restaurant and Bar in Rush City.
When and Where: We will meet at the Highway 70 Landing St Croix National Scenic Riverway just across the boeder in Wisconsin at 10 AM. This trail is approximately a 1 hour drive from St Paul up Interstate 35 to Highway 70 to the St Croix River. The landing, located on the north side of the road, is well kept with ample parking and vault toilets. From the landing we will hike across the bridge on a pedestrian walkway to the The St Croix Trail on the Minnesota side of the river.
The Trail: The St Croix trail is fairly flat as it winds its way through mature hardwood forests with scenic views of the St Croix River along its entire length. As always, bring water, snacks and be prepared for bugs/ticks. You can look up the route on the AllTrails app; https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/minnesota/st-croix-river-trail or on the National Park Service website: https://www.nps.gov/sacn/planyourvisit/hiking.htm
The Fort: The Fort is a unique restaurant and bar located in the Historic Grant House Hotel in Rush City. You can check it out at https://www.thefortrc.com/
Fun Facts: This trail was originally established in the 1970’s and was to be part of a Minnesota-Wisconsin Border Trail stretching from Duluth to Oakdale. Today, just 12 miles of the original 16 mile St Croix portion of this ambitious border trail remain. The National Park Service has recently received grants for trail improvements and the Wild River Conservancy has formed a volunteer trail maintenance crew.
