Hey Rovers! Here’s a great chance to enjoy some classic sights on the Superior Hiking Trail between the Split Rock River and Tettegouche State Park. The highlights of this section include Fault Line Ridge, the roaring Beaver River, Bean & Bear Lakes, and the views from the high points and spur trails in Tettegouche.
This trip is for intermediate ability level backpackers. Mileage each day will be 9-11 miles and include steep, rocky hills. This route is more challenging than a typical state park hike.
We’ll leave the Twin Cities on Friday, July 5 between 9 and 10 a.m., arrive in early afternoon, shuttle a car, and hike in to one of the Split Rock River campsites for the night. We will spend Friday , Saturday, and Sunday nights on trail.
We will arrive in the Tettegouche Baptism River Campground by dinner time on Monday, July 8, where a state park site has been reserved. You can catch a shower and relax in camp for the night, or head home if you want.
Optional Volunteer Work on Tuesday, July 9
After enjoying the stunning beauty of the trail, you may be inspired to help maintain the SHT. If that’s the case, Tuesday is for you. I have signed up for my second assignment as part of the SHT Trailhead Sign Brigade and I could use a person or two to help. Our assignment is to replace the posts on a trailhead sign near Tettegouche. I expect it to take a couple of hours. After that we can decide what else to do, either head home or stick around and enjoy some more of the North Shore sights. My only requirement is to be home by mid-afternoon on Wednesday.
Food is on your own. We may decide to prepare a celebratory group dinner on Monday in the Tettegouche campground. Also expect to eat out on the way up and back.
Gas will be shared according to the formula in the MN Rovers Trip Policy.
