Description:

*** CANCELLED ***

The Sawtooth Range is a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains in central Idaho reaching a maximum elevation of 10,751 feet at the summit of Thompson Peak and encompassing an area of 678 square miles.  It is also home to nearly 400 lakes created by receding alpine glaciers.

This backpacking trip will consist of 55 miles over the course of 9 days with 2 built-in 0-days to enjoy and take in the wilderness.  Average daily mileage will consist of 8 miles per day and a food cache will be picked up on or around day 5 on the trail.

Transportation to Idaho will be by carpool, taking 3 days each direction.  We will take the north route (through North Dakota) on the way out, and the south route (through South Dakota) on the way back.  We will camp for the entire trip and will have access to a public shower house at Redfish Lodge after completion of the backpacking route.

Important notes:

  1. You must be an experienced backpacker capable of hiking 10+ miles per day with a full pack.  If I’m not aware of your backpacking abilities, I will organize a practice hike with full packs in the spring to ensure your capabilities.
  2. Food will be provided by each individual.  En route it is recommended to bring camping/backpacking food as restaurants can be sparse.  No group meals will be provided as part of the trip cost.
  3. This trip will require two bear canisters or ursacks per person, due to the food & supply caching.  Plan in advance to obtain two food storage devices.
  4. No latrines are available, so you must be comfortable using catholes.
  5. A pre-trip plan review meeting will occur in May or June of 2020, with the date to be finalized at a later time.  Given COVID 19, this will be conducted via WebEx or Zoom.
