Description:

A self-contained bicycle tour on the Minnesota River Trail – a short loop beginning at Lake Bemidji State Park

Sun, Aug 22 through Wed, Aug 26

Maximum trip size: 6

Description:

Please join me for a short loop on the Minnesota River and Heartland trails, totaling about 150 miles. We would start by camping at Lake Bemidji on Sun evening and then ride on Mon to Itasca State Park. We should have time to explore both state parks. On Tues, after exploring the metropolis of Park Rapids,  we go to Akeley and camp at the small city park there. On Wed we go about 45 miles to one of the campsites along Cass lake. We finish on Thurs with a 25 mile ride back to Lake Bemidji and then drive to the cities. The route is very flat and mostly trail or bicycle route. We should be able to go a relaxed 8-10 mph even with gear — because of the 4 hr drive out there I don’t think it pays to try to shorten the ride by going further each day. Food would be at restaurants when possible and cooking at camp otherwise. You should be able to view the route at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36788184 .

The main constraint is finding enough vehicles for driving out there that can carry bicycles and gear. Parking at Lake Bemidji will require a State parks pass. At this point we can only get a group site at Lake Bemidji.

Though not difficult, this is not a ride for first time bicycle tourists. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected]

Cost: Shared camping, fuel
