Meet the Minnesota Speleological Survey at Forestville next weekend during their annual gathering known as The Cornfeed. The MSS is a group of people dedicated to the study, exploration, and conservation of caves. See the links at the bottom for more details about MSS.
So what’s a Cornfeed?
It is an opportunity to visit Minnesota caves that may otherwise be difficult to locate, or not open for access to the general public. It is a weekend of caving, camping, and camaraderie. A variety of trips into area caves will be offered and guided.
Consider it a weekend of car camping at Forestville State Park with a focus on caving. The MSS reserves the
group campsite so individual campsites are optional but not required. On Saturday night there is a program, usually of a humorous nature, and free corn on the cob.
There is no cost this year for the Cornfeed ($12 or $15 last year) but attendees must be MSS members ($15/year).
So for $15 you would get an annual membership, camping at Forestville Friday and Saturday night (that in itself would make-up for the $15 membership fee), access to guided “wild” cave trips, and all the other Cornfeed events (i.e. socializing and evening entertainment) & Corn. You would also receive the MSS Monthly for a year. The MSS might even have helmets and lights available for rent (I know they used to but for Cornfeed weekend there may be more than the usual numbers wanting to use them). Rovers may also be able to get borrow a helmet from the equipment locker. Registration info is available at the website below or you can register on site at the Cornfeed. A State Park sticker is required.
If you are interested in going please contact/inform Steve Porter at [email protected]
I can send you a caver’s checklist and tip sheet.
Also, for info on the Cornfeed I highly recommend attendees to visit: https://www.facebook.com/groups/msscaves/
