Hike the Only Gorge on the Mississippi River!
Did you know that the only gorge on the ENTIRE Mississippi River is in our midst? Read about it at this Friends of the Mississippi River article. Join me to hike the Winchell Trail, which will take us through this interesting, beautiful area that is in the heart of the city and will pass by an area of restored oak savanna, among other things.
Meet at 3200 West River Park Parkway — 32nd Street South and West River Parkway — in Minneapolis at 10:00 a.m. (This is two blocks south of Lake Street on the west side of the Mississippi River. If you know where the Longfellow Grill is, just go two blocks south from there.) There should be street parking in the neighborhood. (I’m avoiding suggesting you park in Minneapolis Park parking lots. I think thieves watch for people parking and leaving the lots. They know you’ll be gone for awhile. Do not leave anything in your car. You may even want to consider not locking your car.) We’ll hike south for 45 minutes to an hour and then turn around and come back. Option to stop at the Dairy Queen at 4400 East Lake Street afterwards.
From Lake Street, the trail technically runs about 1.5 miles down to 44th Street. Technically about a 3-mile out and back. Maybe 1.5-2 hours(ish). But the area had tons of trails when I did a test hike, and we could very possibly end up backtracking or, um, getting lost….. (What do you do when you come to a junction when there are FOUR different trails to choose from????) LOL. It also took us down to the river to a couple of sandy beaches that might be a nice place to have a snack. Don’t plan to be anywhere immediately after this hike. We could get lost…or just pleasantly delayed!
Bring bug spray, water, snacks. The trail includes both paved and dirt surfaces. Wear footwear appropriate for rough surfaces. And if you can download the AllTrails map for the Winchell Trail, it wouldn’t hurt to have it on a couple of phones.
Please RVSP to me via text or e-mail so that I can track who is coming.
