Bikepacking — St. Croix Falls, WI

Category: Bicycling

Fri - SunMay 19 - May 212023
  • Estimated Cost: $35
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

This is a great 105 mi bikepacking route to start the biking season.  It should be relatively easy since it is mostly hard-packed crushed limestone, paved roads, and a few very short sections of  dirt roads.  After biking and driving part of the original route, I have modified it so that it is manageable with 28 mm wide tires or larger.  It follows the Gandy Dancer trail from St. Croix Falls, WI to near Webster, WI,  and  then winds through the Reed Lake Meadow State Natural Area and the Fish Lake Wildlife Area.  Finally it returns to the start via the very scenic River Rd. The specific trail  route is described in the links below.  It is based on a more sandy (Original) Mammoth Gravel Loop.

Map of modified route

We will meet near St. Croix Falls late morning on Fri, May 19 and bike about 30 mi to the Sundown Campground.  Then bike between about 40 – 50 mi to the Sandrock Cliff primitive campground  on Sat (depends on road conditions).  Finally, on Sun bike about 30 mi and return home.   It should be a very pretty ride.

Costs will include campsite fees and a Wisconsin trail pass.  Food will be a mix of restaurants, brewpubs, and carried food.  There is no support vehicle.

Coordinator(s):
