Description:

Steens Mountain is the largest fault block mountain in North America. Southwest OR has dramatic lava landscapes at the western extent of the Basin and Range Province that stretches across Nevada. Expect spring wildflower blooms at our lower elevation hiking and camping, gorgeous waterfalls cascading from canyon cliffs, canyon hikes, the Alvord Desert Hot Spring, milk shakes at Fields Station, and more.

5 days of car camp and hiking; 2 days/afternoons for travel to and from the area.

Elevations: camping at 4,000 feet, hiking up to 9,000 feet.

Cost estimate is based on plane ticket, food, rental vehicle share. It could be more, it could be less by $100 depending on cost of airfare.

Arrival: Meet in Fields Station, OR on July 1 by 4 pm. Proceed to South Steens Campground 1 hour further.  Station location: https://goo.gl/maps/4AKdQPTtTu3gFV9d9

Depart from campground in morning or afternoon on July 6 or 7 (based on vehicles and flight plans).

Camping at South Steens Campground (Bureau of Land Management) https://www.blm.gov/visit/south-steens-campground.

Cooperative group meals; bring your own lunches and snacks. Group grocery shopping in Reno.

Travel Arrangements:

This is a remote area. There are no towns nearby, only camping or limited number of rustic rooms. Participants may fly to Reno or drive. If you arrive the day before, camping available at Alvord Hot Springs the night before (https://soakoregon.com/alvord-hot-springs/) or rooms at Fields Station (https://www.thefieldsstation.com/rooms.html).

Flying:  Arrive RENO, NV airport in the morning of July 1. Opportunity for carpooling from Reno airport  via shared rental SUV (5 passengers) will be coordinated once participant travel plans are known.  Reno is 4 hrs drive to Fields Station.

Ice Chests, stoves will be provided locally, possibly rented. TBD.

Grocery shopping trip in Reno before driving to Fields Station

BRING WITH YOU

For Those Flying BRING WITH YOU: Tent, sleeping bag, hiking boots, day backpack, personal first aid, headlamp, etc. Personal items you need.

For those driving, bring the above plus one large ice chest, coleman stoves.

Membership is required on overnight trips (except for Extravaganza and Border Route Trail work trips).

It is the responsibility of both the trip coordinators and the participants to discover and share information related to each others’ experience and capabilities regarding trip-related activities and responsibilities.

It is also club policy that waiver forms be signed by all people participating in Rover events.
