Kayak camping — Voyageurs National Park, MN

This trip is part of the Kayaking Series. It will be a kayak camping trip at Voyageurs National Park. People attending this trip must complete the required steps in the Kayak Camping Series.

Day 1 will be July 9, people will drive to Orr, Minnesota (carpooling recommended, people can opt to camp overnight or stay at a hotel. The North Country Inn in Orr is reasonable).

Day 2 We will travel to the Kabetogama Visitors Center and launch. We will paddle to Echo Island, where we will camp for the night.

Day 3. We will break camp and paddle to Cutover Island to camp the next two nights.

Day 4 Day paddles – possibly to Ellsworth Garden or to Deer Creek, hiking is also possible. Group members will decide together what they want to do.

Day 5 Break camp. Paddle back to Kabetogama Visitors Center. Pack up, travel home.

Requirements for Voyageurs trip

  1. Sea kayak minimum 14 feet long with 2 bulkheads and a skeg or rudder. Kayak must be large enough to accommodate all gear and food for the trip (sleeping bag, pad, tent, stove, food, cookware, clothing, etc). PFD required to be worn on the water, spray skirt required.
  2. Demonstration of sea kayak wet exit with a spray skirt, and assisted rescue as both rescuer and rescued. This must be demonstrated to one of the trip coordinators. Self-rescue work encouraged.
  3. Practice and demonstration of basic kayak maneuvering and paddling skills. Must be able to paddle up to a 10-15 mile day. Participants are encouraged to paddle frequently in preparation for the trip.
  4. Practice session packing and paddling a full kayak.
  5. Involvement in pre-trip planning for the Voyageurs trip.
  6. For safety, while on the trip, all participants must agree to paddle and stay together as a group and participate in group and decisions.
  7. Access to appropriate kayak paddling and camping gear (May get some of this from the Equipment Locker). This will be discussed at group meetings.

Cost of $15 is to cover camping. Gas, transportation to Voyageurs, overnight cost in Orr is extra. We will make food decisions as a group (people can cook on their own or people can opt to cook together) as we make our plans.

Voyageurs Registration will be on a first come basis, with a waiting list. If by June 30, a person on the list has not met the requirements, they must talk to the trip coordinators to make arrangements to meet requirements, or their spot will go to the next person on the wait list.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Membership is required on overnight trips (except for Extravaganza and Border Route Trail work trips).

It is the responsibility of both the trip coordinators and the participants to discover and share information related to each others’ experience and capabilities regarding trip-related activities and responsibilities.

It is also club policy that waiver forms be signed by all people participating in Rover events.
