Canoe Trip — BWCA, Sawbill, MN

Category: Camping, Paddling

Mon - SunAug 7 - Aug 132023
  • Estimated Cost: $50
  • Deposit: $50
  • Max Trip Size: 8 people
Description:

We are excited to announce a canoe trip to the BWCA entering on Tuesday, August 8th at the Sawbill entry point (#38). We plan to canoe a loop for 4-5 days. This is a beautiful area of the boundary waters.  This is not a beginner’s trip; you must have experience paddling and portaging.

Participants can bring their own canoe/gear, or arrange to rent from Sawbill outfitters, right near our entry point. Another option is to get gear from the Rovers gear locker.

The distance we travel each day will depend upon weather, number of portages, portage conditions, and many other factors, but we will aim for about 5 hours of travel each day. Depending upon group interest, we may take a layover day with options to do a day paddle, go fishing, or just relax. We hope to have at least one pre-trip meeting before the trip to discuss strategy, food plans (individual or common), and gear.

The trip begins by camping the night before at the Sawbill campground at the entry point so we get an early start on day 1.

We will have Kepler the dog on the trip with us.  If you also want to bring a dog, we’d like to have them meet each other ahead of time.

Costs will include the permit, stove fuel, pre-trip camping (Aug 7th), and miscellaneous.  Additional expenses may include carpooling, canoe rental, common food, fishing license, etc. We are collecting a deposit of $50 and will refund any that is left after the trip.

We will host a pre-trip practice event on Saturday, June 24th where we can canoe and portage at Lebanon Hills.  Watch for this event.

If you are interested, please email us and let us know how much experience you have with canoeing and portaging.
