Join us for a trip to explore Isle Royale National Park, where we will spend four days backpacking the Feldtmann loop trail. This trip is geared toward 2021 and 2022 graduates of the Rovers’ Beginner Backpacking Program, but others with previous backpacking experience are welcome. Feldtmann loop is about 30 miles (with an optional 5-mile spur to Mt. Desor on day two) and is rated as intermediate level.
The trip runs Sunday, July 16 to Friday, July 21 – two travel days and four days on the trail. The plan is to drive up to Grand Portage on Sunday, July 16 and stay overnight at the casino hotel (there is also a campground next door). Monday morning, we will take the ferry from Grand Portage to Windigo, on the West side of the island. From there, we will start hiking Feldtmann loop clockwise, arriving back at Windigo to camp Thursday night. We’ll take the ferry back to Grand Portage on Friday afternoon and drive back to the Twin Cities.
The cost estimate is $340 per person including the ferry ($174 round trip), shared portion of the park entrance fee ($15), and hotel (up to $150 for a single room). Costs could be reduced by sharing a hotel room or staying at the Grand Portage campground. The $174 shown as a deposit is the cost of the ferry. Ferry seats fill quickly, so we will be finalizing the group and purchasing seats as soon as possible.
