This is a camping, hiking, and exploring trip to Michigan, highlighted by the Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day (Monday, September 4th). I have one campsite reserved at Straits State Park, which is located at the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge, so we are limited to a total of 6 people. Arrival at the state park is on Friday, September 1 and departure is on Tuesday, September 5.
The feature of this trip is walking the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day (Monday, September 4th), which is only available to pedestrians on Labor Day each year. The bridge spans 5 miles, but you can customize your walk for your needs. Ambitious folks may attempt to walk it in both directions for a total of 10 miles. For that reason, priority for this trip will be given to members who are planning to walk the bridge. See this website for details ( https://www.mackinacbridge.org/events/walk/ ).
Also note that this is an area that is rich in things to do, including a day trip to Mackinac Island, a visit to the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie (60 miles away), and exploring the local towns of St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, as well as other areas. You may swim in Lake Huron if you desire.
Transportation is on your own, but carpooling is strongly encouraged. In my experience (and I have driven this route many times) one should plan on about 10 hours each way for the trip. Meals are on your own too, but group dinners are a possibility.
Please contact Millard for details or to sign up. Note that I will be “off the grid” from August 8-12.
