Each fall, thousands of sandhill cranes migrate south via a stop at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. They spend the days in nearby farm fields and return to the refuge each evening in the hour before sunset (which is around 6 pm). We plan to hike during the afternoon, followed by going to a viewing area to watch the incoming cranes. You are welcome to attend just the hike or just the cranes if you prefer.
The hike:
Meet at the Blue Hill Trailhead at 2 p.m. where we will do a 4-5 mile loop hike on the trails in Sherburne NWR. All walking speeds are welcome. Water and snacks are recommended. This hike is largely open, so sun protection is recommended if the weather requires it. A limited number of dogs are welcome. Please contact me if you plan to bring a dog. Here is a map of the refuge.
The Sandhill Crane Viewing:
We will drive the short distance to the Sandhill Crane Viewing Area at 4:30 – 5 pm so we will be there in plenty of time to watch the incoming cranes. We will be in an unpaved parking area from what I can tell. A chair and binoculars may be helpful. We may also be able to have a “Birders-style tailgate party” of sorts so feel free to bring snacks and beverages.
Non-Rovers members are welcome if they fill out the waiver below. Please let me know if you plan to attend and whether you are attending both parts or just one part of this event.
