Introduction to Winter Camping — Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, MN

Category: Winter Camping

Fri - SunJan 26 - Jan 282024
  • Estimated Cost: $10
  • Max Trip Size: 8 people
Description:

If you enjoy camping in hot and humid July or if you think that the time between wildfire season and hunting season is too short, I invite you to try camping in a gentle, cooler setting. I can promise that there will be no mosquitoes, no bears, and great sleeping weather. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is less than 2 hrs from the twin cities and we will be in a standard drive-in site allowing you to bring plenty of extra gear and warm clothing.

You will of course need clothing appropriate to the expected temperatures along with a suitable sleeping bag, pad, and tent. One can nest bags and stack pads if it looks to be very cold. To help you, the Rover equipment locker has tents, sleeping bags, mats, and stoves. Let me know if you have questions about gear.

There is a suggestion of snow in the long range forecast so bring snowshoes (see the equipment locker) so that you can tamp down (sinter) the snow that will be under your tent. Self supporting tents are easiest; we will tie them down to dead-man anchors or stakes as required.

You need to provide your own meals. We will demonstrate how to use alcohol stoves, jet boil type stoves, and liquid-fueled whisperlites. We will also demonstrate several tents including a hot tent, tube tent, and hammocks. There will be pulks to try out but they won’t be needed for these campsites. During the day we will hike or ski and you can determine whether your layering system keeps you both warm and importantly, dry.

Send an email if you want to join the trip and/or have questions.

Cost will cover the shared camp site and wood. Maybe $10.
