Description:

Let’s visit Wildcat Mountain State Park in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin for four nights from Thursday, July 25 through Monday, July 29. I reserved group campsite C, which has a large, flat open area with a shelter that we need to share with two other group sites.

Things to do:

  • Hike on the 21 miles of hiking and equestrian trails meander through the park. Many hikes are accessible right from the campsite. More hiking is available at the nearby Kickapoo Valley Reserve.
  • Paddle on the Kickapoo River, which flows below the park’s bluffs. It has 22 miles of paddling with dramatic river banks. We can use a paddling outfitter in the nearby town of Ontario, so we shouldn’t need to shuttle vehicles.
  • Bike on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. The closest trailhead is in Wilton, WI, which is about 15 minutes by car from the park. 32.5 miles. Crushed limestone. Several old railroad tunnels. State trail pass required ($5 daily). More info here. Bike rentals appear to be available at Elroy Commons, which may be ~30 min. by car from the park.
  • Mountain Bike at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve: http://kvr.state.wi.us/Recreation/Trails/BicycleTrails/
  • Socialize at the Wildcat Bar and Grill or River’s End Bar and Grill in Ontario. Or visit Hillsboro Brewing Company.
  • Visit Branches Winery (about 30 min. west) and/or Vernon Vineyards (7 more min. west).

A Wisconsin State Park vehicle pass is required (out-of-state vehicles are $11 daily, $38 annual (valid from date of purchase through Dec. 2024).

Trip fee includes camping and firewood.

You must be a member of Minnesota Rovers to go on this trip.
