Come and join me to explore the many species of birds that migrate through and breed at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. If we are lucky, the red-headed woodpeckers, orioles, thrushes and warblers will give us a good look at them. The warblers are coming back! Four species have been seen so far, including the blue-winged warbler. More will be here by the time of the trip! Warblers, flycatchers, woodpeckers, thrushes and vireos are common in the park, with 31 species of warblers and vireos having been recorded. There is a good chance to see a Scarlet Tanager. Bring your binoculars and bird book (optional) and park in the main parking lot. We will meet at the picnic shelter promptly at 9. A daily or annual vehicle permit is required. We will hike to various locations and then stop and listen and observe the birds that are present, then move on to the next location. Total distance will be about 3-4 miles. We can also observe any remaining spring wildflowers if desired. Bring any water or snacks you might want. Please email me directly with questions and if you plan to come.
