Backpacking — Isle Royale, MI

Category: Backpacking

Thu - ThuJul 25 - Aug 12024
  • Estimated Cost: $450
  • Deposit: $50
  • Max Trip Size: 4 people
Description:

Isle Royale is the least visited National Park but the most re-visited. We’ll be flying by seaplane from Grand Marais into Rock Harbor and following the Greenstone trail to Windigo with a plane ride back to Grand Marais. We’ll cover 8 miles most days so this trip is for experienced backpackers.

We can expect some rain and mosquitoes but also stunning vistas and moose sightings. We’ll get together for a shakedown hike to ensure everyone is capable and prepared for a remote location with no cell service and limited medical resources.

Each backpacker will be responsible for their own food and although bears are not a concern the foxes are likely to go after any unprotected food. Bear vaults and other equipment is available from the Rovers gear locker.

The plane cost is $400 each, share of park pass is $15. Transportation to Grand Marais is not included but cost-share carpooling is available.

Intended dates are Fri, July 26 – Thu, Aug 1 but seat availability and potential weather delays mean some flexibility may be required. Campsites are not reservable but have space for enough tents such that this trip is limited to 4 Rovers. Please indicate your interest by June 7 but sooner is better as seats may go quickly.
