Let’s camp at nearby William O’Brien State Park over Memorial Day weekend. The park is less than an hour from most of the Twin Cities area along the St. Croix River north of Stillwater.
We’ll camp at the Riverside group site, which has vault toilets and may not have water due to construction that is nearly done in that area of the park.
You might be able to drive up after work on Thursday (or work a half day) and burn only one vacation day for Friday the 23.
Activity ideas include:
- Biking—You can bike on the Gateway State Trail by driving about 15 min. to the trailhead at Pine Point Regional Park. The Gateway trail has access to Brown’s Creek State Trail, which goes to Stillwater.
- Paddling—You can paddle on the St. Croix River. If memory serves, you can put-in upriver and take out right at William O’Brien’s boat launch. An organizer would be welcome.
- Hiking—You can hike on the 12 miles of trails within the park.
- Visiting the nearby towns of Marine on St. Croix, Stillwater, and Scandia for food, drink, and merriment. I noticed a winery is nearby: https://rusticroots.wine/.
Since the park is a short drive from the metro, Rovers who are not officially on the trip should be able to join us at the park to participate in activities over that weekend. We might want to post these activities as day trips on the website. Contact me if you’d like to organize something and join us at William O’Brien.
