If you were on a trip in the backcountry and someone was injured or ill, would you know what to do? Imagine if you were in the BWCA in a remote lake, a number of portages in, without a cell signal. How would you decide what to do or when to try to evacuate someone? Wilderness First Aid is defined as first aid more than an hour from definitive care. Much more is involved than when EMS can be there in 5 minutes. This is a 16 hour class over 2 Saturdays. It will give you a framework for assessment and decision-making for a range of possible medical scenarios in the backcountry. The class is very hands-on, with lots of scenarios and practice. Completion will earn you a 2 year certification in Wilderness First Aid.
Our instructor, Tom O-Neal, is a certified Wilderness First Responder and bike medic for the Twin Cities Marathon. He has provided this training for Boy Scout leaders, Inland Sea Kayakers, and the Minnesota Rovers over many years. This class is specifically for current Rover members. - Because the class involves close contact as we practice assessing and treating simulated medical situations with other participants, people are encouraged and may be required to wear masks and gloves in close situations, depending upon the status of flu and viruses in Minnesota a the time of the class. Some masks and gloves will be available at the class.
