Description:

Join us January 9th for the first day of 4Play, when we’ll heat up winter in a way only MSP can. Try a new winter activity for the first time or stick with a trusty favorite that works for you – there’s no wrong way to do it. Just come, bring a friend and get ready to connect with thousands of new ones! Help others experience the joy of winter by volunteering! Minnesota Rovers will once again assist REI and Fort Snelling staff with free activities that showcase how much fun winter can be! We will be helping visitors with snowshoes. REI said they couldn’t do this without our help. Other activities will include geocaching, naturalist-led hikes, cold weather camping information, and skijoring& dogsledding information. There is a building there with a fire pit and hot drinks if you need to warm up. The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but you may volunteer for just part of that time. REI requested that we have people available from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 9th, 2016: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

We’ll provide the gear – all that’s required is you and an open mind.

– You’ve heard of a biathlon, a pentathlon, and a decathlon, but you’ve probably never taken part in an ARTathlon, an artist-created exercise course. Strap on your art boots and warm up to discover surprising installations and activities in the park. Complete the full course and return to the main tent to claim your ARTathlon medal!

– Heat up in the Little Box Sauna

– Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe with REI

– Ice Fish, Ice Harvest, and Ice Sculpt with the National Park Service

– Take a hike with the U.S. Forest Service

– Learn what the heck is a quinzee with Wilderness Inquiry

– Take part in Minnesota N*ICE Breaker games and activities hosted by Saint Paul Hello

– Have S’more Conversation with Impact Hub MSP and Newcomer Nosh

– Find out if you and your dog are a perfect match for skijoring with Midwest Skjorers Club

– Lend a hand in setting MSP up to become the first ‘Sports Epic’ snowball event (200 people needed for 2:00 p.m. game)

– Fuel up with snacks from Food Trucks and KIND Snacks, and stay hydrated with Resqwater

– Sing and dance with the Coro Flamenco Street Choir

– Plus music, bon fires, hot chocolate complements of the Jeffers Foundation, giveaways and more.

A valid state park vehicle permit is required ($5 daily, $25 annual). Permits can be purchased at the Fort Snelling State Park Office.

**I can still use at least 2 more volunteers for this event. Everyone so far is staying entire shift from 11:00am – 4:00pm but shift can be broken up if needed or if we get more volunteers breaks can be taken as needed or to enjoy event. As long as we have 8-10 volunteers helping out at all times we are good to go!**

Volunteers will work the snowshoe area. REI staff will give volunteers an overview on the different types of snowshoes, how to get them on and other tips related to the sport before their shift.

Responsibilities:

· Invite people over to the snowshoe area to give it a try

· Help them find a pair of snowshoes that will work for them

· Help them get the snowshoes on their feet

· Instruct them that they can demo the snowshoes for about 20-30 minutes

o Tell people about guided hikes they can join (on snowshoes) starting on the hour

o Or people can take the snowshoes out anywhere by themselves for about 20-30 minutes

****I will be at event day of and you can email me at: [email protected] or if needed text or call at:
(763) 222-4010 – I will not be at volunteer station all day but will be there early to gather everyone together for REI orientation. If you are interested in helping out please reach out and I will let you know any other pertinent details closer to event date****
