Description:

Hello Rovers!

Join us for this year’s Rovers Astronomy Weekend trip to Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC)!  This year, we’ll take advantage of Juneteenth and extend our trip an extra day!  It will be from Thurs. 6/18 thru Sun. 6/21.

During the day we’ll hike, paddle and do other Roverish activities, and then stargaze at night, peering at some of the sky’s cosmic wonders thru some of the largest telescopes in Minnesota.  June is a great time to be out under the stars from a dark sky location.  The nights are warm, the galaxies of springtime are visible right after dark, and the Summer Milky Way starts to rise in the eastern sky, revealing its many nebulae, star clusters and other wonders to us thru our telescopes.

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC) is near McGregor, MN… about a 2.5 hr drive north of MSP, on the other side of Mills Lacs.

Estimated trip cost will be $150-$200, depending on which accommodations and meals you select.

Tentative Schedule:

Thurs. June 18th

  • 5:00pm or later arrival
  • 9:30pm – Astronomical Viewing after dark on observing field (weather permitting)
  • No Meals Provided (bring your own dinner)

Fri. June 19th (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner are available for purchase, or bring your own)

  • Daytime activities TBD
    • Potential for nature hikes/presentation by LLCC staff and/or hiking thru Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge)
  • 9:30pm – Astronomical Viewing after dark on observing field (weather permitting)

  • 1:00pm – Hiking/Biking at Savannah Portage State Park
  • 9:30pm – Astronomical Viewing after dark on observing field (weather permitting)

Sun. June 21st (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner are available for purchase, or bring your own)

  • 1:00pm – Hiking/Biking/Paddling at Cuyuna Recreation Area near Ironton, MN
    • Paddlers must bring your own canoe or kayak, or rent one locally from Cuyuna Outfitters in Crosby (they’ll deliver their boats to the boat launch)
    • Trip officially ends after the Sunday afternoon activity at Cuyuna

If you’re interested in joining us, please drop me an e-mail at [email protected].  Once LLCC opens up their website, you will be directed to register and pay for your lodging and/or meals.
