I’m planning to backpack two sections of the Superior Hiking Trail over the long Labor Day Weekend, driving up Friday morning and returning by Tuesday evening. First section will be the most remote part of the trail, from 270° Overlook to Judge Magney State Park, passing the Devil’s Kettle Falls. Second section is more populated, from Grand Marais Overlook to Cascade River State Park where we will hike along the east side of the river on the old SHT with a live “wet” crossing of Trout Creek. 43+ total trail miles in 3 ½ days however, if you can only do one of the two sections due to time constraints that would be okay.
This will be a challenging trip because of the number of daily miles. Up to 5 Rovers who are experienced backpackers are invited. If you’ve completed one of our beginner backpacking trips, you qualify! This is a Rover trip so you can access the gear locker if you need a pack, tent, stove, etc.
The trip outline below is based on one vehicle and use of the Superior Hiking Shuttle. If we take two vehicles, we can skip the shuttle and have more flexibility on our times.
Friday 8/31, Day 0, drive up north in the morning, stretch our legs (maybe an out-and-back to Britton Peak or hunt for agates along the north shore), lunch in Grand Marais, take the 7 PM shuttle from Judge Magney State Park to Otter Lake Rd Trailhead and stealth camp near the trailhead.
Saturday 9/1, Day 1, quick out-and-back to 270° Overlook (the northern terminus of the SHT) then hike to Jackson Creek campsite (15.6 big miles.)
Sunday 9/2, Day 2, hike to Magney State Park (10.2 miles) try to grab a shower then find a SHT campsite near a trailhead between Grand Marais & Cascade River State Park.
Monday 9/3, Day 3, take the 8 AM shuttle to Grand Marais Scenic Overlook and hike to North Cascade Campsite (13.3 miles.)
Tuesday 9/4, Day 4, hike out to Cascade River State Park (easy 4.2 miles), eat somewhere half-civilized and drive home.
Shared transportation costs would include mileage, fuel, and shuttle; meals on your own. Please rsvp with me no later than Friday 8/24 so I can reserve the shuttle for Magney SP to Otter Lake Rd.
