Trip Full Wait List OpenCategory: Hiking, Camping

Fri - SunMay 10 - May 122019
  • Estimated Cost: $20
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

The remote setting of the Suomi Hills semi-primitive non-motorized area is graced with rolling hills, clear lakes and some of the most spectacular fall color in the area. Suomi Hills is located about nine miles south of Marcell and 14 miles north of Grand Rapids off State Highway 38, along the “Edge of the Wilderness” National Scenic Byway.

We will leave the Twin Cities at 4pm on Friday, arriving at Suomi Hills around 8pm.  We will hike 1-3 miles into our primitive or wild campsite of choice to setup camp before dark.  Saturday will involve 8-12 miles of hiking, followed by hiking out on Sunday and returning to the Twin Cities by evening.  Total mileage should be expected to be in the range of 15-19 miles.

Important notes:

1.  This is not a beginner hike.  You should be an intermediate+ backpacker comfortable hiking 8-12 miles with a full pack.

2.  Food will be provided by each individual, no group meals will be provided.

3.  Latrines are minimal and you must plan on using catholes.

Trip cost covers carpooling expenses only.  There are no campsite or permit costs in this area.

Coordinator(s):
