Backpacking — Cloud Peak Wilderness, WY

Category: Backpacking

Fri - SunJul 28 - Aug 62023
  • Estimated Cost: $400
  • Deposit: $75
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

The purpose of the trip is to hike the Solitude trail in the Cloud Peak Wilderness near Buffalo WY.  Starting at Hunters TH we will hike the 65 mile trail counterclockwise, small elevation change early gives us time to acclimate to the altitude, 8500-10,000.  We’ll keep mileage at 7 miles a day first two days, 10 miles a day after that.  This is an eight day trip with a zero at day 6 to summit Cloud Peak, Bomber Mountain or fish for trout.    The trip requires a hard days drive from Mpls to Buffalo Wy and a hard days drive back making the total trip a 10 day adventure. We will stay in Buffalo the first and last night.   This will be my 6th trip. I have seen moose on every trip and expect to see elk and bear on the northern part of the trail.  The scenery is spectacular.   There is no resupply available so we need to carry all of our food.  Many areas of the trail are above tree line so: an ursack is required and a hammock will not work in many of the areas we camp.  Backpacking experience is preferred but a knowledgeable rookie is fine.  I will have at least two planning meetings prior to the trip.
