Forecast is for hot weather with a light breeze. Let’s make the best of it by spending a day at one of the best and largest natural beaches within driving distance of the metro area!
Long Point (called Sand Point on state park maps) is a sand bar on Lake Pepin accessible via a 0.7 mile hike or 1.3 miles by boat from the nearby Florence Township boat launch.
Meet us at the Florence Township Beach/Boat Launch on Lake St. in Old Frontenac (https://www.google.com/maps/search/florence+township+beach/@44.5291516,-92.3302908) before 9:00 a.m. We will get boats launched for people traveling to Long Point via boat and then coordinate a move to the trailhead for any people who are hiking to Long Point. If you are hiking we can transport any heavier items for you via boat. If hiking be prepared for muddy sections on the trail.
Bring sunscreen, a beach towel, a picnic lunch, a water bottle, and a swimsuit. Bring water shoes of some kind — due to the presence of zebra mussels and debris you are likely to cut your foot if wading in the sand barefoot. Beach umbrellas and chairs are optional.
This is a dog-friendly beach (bring your dog!). The park rules require dogs to be on-leash however we are likely to encounter other groups with off-leash pets.
Nearest restrooms are either at Frontenac State Park (vehicle permits required) or at the Highway 61 Rest Stop near Lake City — plan accordingly; I will bring a shovel to the beach if anyone needs to make a cathole.
The coordinators will bring two sailboats and a small (14′) powerboat. You can take lessons on any of these or can take them out on the lake by yourself. Bring your own kayaks or canoes if you like or check one out from the gear locker.
The coordinators will provide a large jug of water and an ice chest that you may use if you have items to keep cool.
We will pack everything up around 3:00 and get boats loaded and everyone back on the road by 4:00.
Be aware that this is a popular area and there are typically other groups with boats present.
