Beginner Backpacking: Education Program – Backpacks & Hiking Equipment

Description:

Choosing a backpack can be overwhelming for both beginner and experienced backpackers. We will help you find a backpack the proper size and fit along with helpful hints to make your backpacking adventures more enjoyable. We will also cover other important hiking gear, including hiking boots and trekking poles.  Meeting is via Zoom; link will be sent a few days ahead of the meeting. Presented by Chris F.

Thanks for your interest in the 2021 Minnesota Rovers beginner backpacking program!  If you’ve been wanting to go on some of the awesome Rovers backpacking trips but don’t know where to start or just feel you need more experience, then this program is for you!

Our four-part program is comprised of a progressive series of trainings designed to get you on the trail.

  1. Six educational sessions over Zoom designed to teach you all the basics of backpacking.
    1. Backpacking Introduction
    2. Backcountry Basics
    3. Backpacks & Hiking Equipment
    4. Shelters & Sleep Systems
    5. Backpacking Clothing Systems
    6. Cooking/Stoves/Nutrition
  2. Day training hikes to teach you how to hike with a backpack.
  3. Overnight training trips to nearby state parks where you can try out your new skills.  Groups will be small to maximize your learning!
  4. Two-night training trips to practice moving camp and further hone your new skills.

Watch our website at www.mnrovers.org for future sessions to be posted.  Beginner backpacking events and outings for the year will be posted throughout Spring of 2021.

Program Prerequisites:

  1. Rovers membership required for all parts of this program (including training, day trips and overnight events).  Signup here:  https://mnrovers.org/sign-up/
  2. Previous car camping experience required.
  3. Must be capable of day hiking up to 5 miles.  (You’ll learn how to hike with a pack in this program!)
  4. Overnight trips:  Must complete all 6 educational sessions and at least one day training hike.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Minnesota Rovers has suspended all in-person Tuesday meetings, due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. We are now offering virtual meetings via Zoom. Send us a message to request the link and access code.

Outdoor day trips, including conservation activities, are now permitted with guidelines. For our Stay Safe MN Rovers plan and COVID-19 day trip guidelines, please see our Trip Coordination page.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Membership is required on overnight trips (except for Extravaganza and Border Route Trail work trips).

It is the responsibility of both the trip coordinators and the participants to discover and share information related to each others’ experience and capabilities regarding trip-related activities and responsibilities.

It is also club policy that waiver forms be signed by all people participating in Rover events.
