Want to try backpacking for the first time?
You’ve been out once and want to solidify your skills?
Want to coordinate a beginner backpacking trip yourself and want to co-coordinate with someone first?
This is the trip for you!
We’ll plan this trip together from selecting the route to figuring out meals. Along the way we’ll learn how to choose the right gear, pack a pack, cook with a backpacking stove, filter water, hang a bear bag, and train to get into shape for the physical challenges.
Don’t have backpacking gear? We’ll get what you need from the gear locker.
This trip is open to:
4-5 Rovers who have been on 0 or 1 backpacking trips
Up to 1 Rover who has experience and plans to coordinate their own beginner trip this year or next.
Note: “Beginner” is in terms of backcountry camping skills. The SHT is a rugged trail that is more difficult than most state park trails in Minnesota. We won’t be knocking off 14-mile days, but you should be able to handle 8 miles with a 30 lb pack in a state park OR commit to getting into shape to do that prior to the trip. That way you will be ready for the terrain we will encounter on the SHT.
We will have an approximately 3 hour pre-trip get together in May to plan our route and gear.
