The Wabakimi Boreal Caribou Citizen Monitoring Project is a three year research effort that relies on volunteer citizen scientists. Qualified individual and groups are assigned a research area within the Provincial Park to survey for signs of the threatened woodland caribou. The typical survey trip involves five days of survey work, a couple days paddling in and a couple days paddlng out. This is the third year of the project.
For us, we will also have a day of travel on each end, so it is about a 11 day trip. The project assigns you a specific area of the park and a window of time for your trip. They also required on-line training in survey work.
The project has rigorous requirements for all participants and is listed here: https://www.wabakimi.org/project-requirements.html. It includes a minimum of two, 5+ days of experience in wilderness canoe tripping. Two within each survey group must have current Wilderness First Aid or equalvalent certificates. Our group may be grouped with others to reach minimums.
Applications are now open and we need to quickly get in each participant’s application. We are targeting an August trip, but final dates depend upon the project assignment. We are also leaning toward car or train entrance to the park as fly-in may be cost prohibitive.
Three people have expressed interest already; it would be nice to submit with a group of four. We will have a pre-submission talks this week yet to pick preferred dates – so let me know quickly if you are interested and can commit. Required survey training is later this spring and then detailed planning will be in early summer.
Dates in this posting are approximate and subject to change as the group develops. Deposit is only if our applications are accepted and due when we start buying food. Permits are covered by the survey project.
