Fri - SunFeb 24 - Feb 262023

  • Max Trip Size: 40 people
Description:

Annual Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing and Nature Education at Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center.

Come to Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center in Hackensack (north of Brainerd) for a pleasant weekend of winter fun. Activities include skiing (11 miles of groomed trails for traditional cross-country), snowshoeing, ice fishing (you just need your license), climbing wall, stargazing from the observation tower, reading or socializing by the fireplace with a glass of wine, enjoying the outdoor campfire ring. Ski equipment or snowshoes available, free of charge, for the weekend. Other nearby ski trails include Hiram Ski Trail and Goose Lake Trail (in Chippewa National Forest).

Circumstances (Covid) have changed things a bit at Deep Portage since we last attended. They are no longer able to provide meals to weekend groups but will allow us to prepare simpler group meals in the lounge areas. This will not be a “bring your own food” but rather, group meals prepared by Rover volunteers. We will be looking for volunteers to help on this. Another change will be the maximum trip size. This is limited because those of us preparing food want to get outside and play as well.

Dorm-style rooms (with bunks) have their own bathroom with shower and sink area There will be approx. four people in rooms-lower bunks-so lots of room to stretch out. Bring your own bedding (sleeping bag or sheets), pillow and towels. Because we will be indoors and sharing sleeping rooms with 2-3 other people, all attendees will need to show confirmation by February 12, 2023 that they are fully vaccinated and appropriately boosted against COVID-19 according to the CDC standards. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html?s_cid=11706:covid%2019%20vaccine%20booster:sem.ga:p:RG:GM:gen:PTN:FY22

The cost of the trip will be approx $165. This includes 2 nights lodging, activities and 4 delicious Rover-prepared meals (Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, lunch and dinner on Saturday). An $85 deposit will be due when you register. Remainder due weekend of event.

Carpooling to be arranged closer to the event. Contact by e-mail preferred.
