Eclipse Trip! — The Path of Totality (near Lincoln), Nebraska

Category: Camping, Other Summer Activities

Sun - TueAug 20 - Aug 222017
  • Estimated Cost: $90
  • Deposit: $50
  • Max Trip Size: 12 people
Description:

Eclipse time! On Monday, August 21 a total solar eclipse will be visible across the USA with the path of total eclipse passing as close as Nebraska. I have a reservation for Sunday night at Branched Oak State Recreation Area in Nebraska just outside the path of totality.

The drive down to Nebraska on Sunday will be about 7 hours. We’ll camp and drive to the path of totality on Monday morning. The eclipse will be around mid-day. Be prepared to change plans depending on cloud cover. In order to remain flexible, I did not make a reservation for Monday night. We’ll start driving home after the eclipse and find a place to camp on the way home. Return home on Tuesday, time to be determined. Be prepared to be away from home through dinner time on Tuesday.

Estimated cost is $70-$100, which includes gas& mileage ($50-$60 based on 3-4 people per vehicle) and campsites. I am working on finding eclipse viewing glasses/filters. Food will be on your own or can be planned as a group. Food is not included in the estimated price.

This trip is weather dependent. Deposit is $50. $45 will be refunded in case of weather cancellation. (Campsite reservation already paid.) One site currently reserved. Will reserve up to 2 additional campsites if more people sign up, based on availability. Campsites in the area are going fast, so don’t delay.
