Please join me for a 9-10 mile loop hike in beautiful Afton State Park! You are also welcome to join us for the beginning and veer off to complete your own shorter hike, as well. Afton has lots of hills, so plan for a hilly hike. I labeled this as a Fitness Hike because the plan is to hike at a medium-fast* pace. See below for more details.
I’d like everyone who plans to go the full distance to carry water. Bringing lunch/snacks is also encouraged, as we will stop for breaks at Trout Brook and an Overlook.
Meet outside the Visitor’s Center, LOCATED HERE.. This is not the Ranger Station that you pass soon after entering the park. The Visitor’s Center is a few miles farther down the road where there are several large parking lots. Please allow plenty of time to drive through the park and be at the meeting location before 9 AM. We will try to leave on time. You will need a state park pass (daily or yearly). These can be purchased at the Ranger Station (not our meeting point).
A limited number of well-behaved dogs are welcome. Please contact me if you plan to bring a dog, so we don’t end up with too many. Dogs will be given a couple of opportunities to cool off in the river or a stream.
Please send me an email or text if you plan to come. Sometimes there are last-minute updates, plus it’s the right thing to do when requested. Non-Rovers are encouraged! Please submit the online liability waiver below, and then email or text me to sign up.
*My definition of a medium-fast hike is 17-19 minutes per mile, 3.2-3.5 mph. This is the moving speed. Steep hills will slow the pace. We will also take breaks as desired. If you find you cannot keep up with the group, please be willing to veer off and continue the hike on your own so that others may hike at the advertised pace (be sure to let me know, so we aren’t looking for you!).
