Let’s get outside and enjoy the day with a winter hike once (3 miles) or twice (6 miles) around Lake Harriet! Another option is to snowshoe to the center of the lake where there is usually a lot of unbroken snow. I plan to pack my snowshoes and do a little of both!
11:00 AM is Hike time. We will meet at the north end of Lake Harriet by the Bandshell, 4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway. Please plan for plenty of time to find parking in the lot (free) or the neighborhood (also free but note any restrictions) and to get geared up and find us. There are portable toilets on site (yay!) Temps may rise close to freezing, but it’s very windy on at least half the lake so wear your layers. I also recommend footwear grippers (chains, studs, microspikes, Diamond Grips, Yaktrax) as there are a couple long shaded sections of trail that can be covered in ice.
12:00-4:00 PM is the Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival, free as well. Even if you don’t hike, this is a really fun activity for families and anyone who likes to take pictures. Is this the year I’ll remember to bring my hiking kite and join in? More info here: https://www.minneapolisparks.org/activities__events/events/lake_harriet_winter_kite_festival/
Following the hike, we can go to Harriet’s Inn, 4000 Lyndale Avenue South https://www.harrietsinn.com/ or one of the many other local joints for eats/drinks/socializing (optional, of course.)
Not a member of Minnesota Rovers? You are welcome to join us but must sign the waiver, available online by following the link.
No need to RSVP, but you may if you like. Hope to see you there! Let me know if you have questions.
