Have you ever gone to the Art Shanty Project at Bdé Umáŋ / Lake Harriet, Minneapolis? Artists take on the strange and wonderful task of decorating an ice shanty with a unique theme. This year is the 20th anniversary. If there is enough ice on the lake, the shanties are on the lake. Last year the ice was too thin, so the shanties are near the band shell on land.
Each year is different than the last. The emphasis is on creativity outdoors. 19 shanties and over 20 performances. Here is a link and info from the website:
ON ICE PROGRAM
Our on-ice program happens each year for four weekends in January & February. Since 2004, artists have been building shanties and creating interactive experiences for winter adventurers, sharing joy through the extreme winter sport of artmaking.
PARKING – there is a small paid parking lot on the northwest side of the lake (“Bandshell Lot”), as well as free street parking spots around the parkway that circles the lake.
YOU WILL NEED: very warm coats, mittens, hat (balaclava or face covering is best) and boots with ice cleats for walking on ice.
RSVP and we will arrange exactly where we will meet.
