We have access to Long Lake Conservation Center just outside MacGregor, MN starting Friday the 28th around 3 pm. It’s about 2.5 hours away from the Cities. (Thanks to Brian for suggesting this place at the Extravaganza!)
Long Lake is similar to those of you who are familiar with Deep Portage – dorms rooms, bunk beds, bathrooms in the rooms. It was built the same year too!
They will have a naturalist available for a Bog walk and an energy tour of the campus on Saturday. They have miles of hiking trails which can also handle mountain and fatter tire bikes, although they are not mountain bike trails. There are also canoes available to borrow, assuming it is nice enough to be on the water that weekend.
Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge is close by, as is Savanna Portage State Park.
The Minnesota Astronomy Club keeps telescopes at the Center and Suresh has offered to arrange for someone from that club to be there for star gazing session one of the evenings.
Saturday night will be the costume party and time for games, pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and whatever else we can think of!!
Long Lake will provide Saturday night dinner and can accommodate vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free. We will have an entree, vegetable, salad, starch and dessert. Dinner at 6 leaves us lots of time to play. We are on our own for dinner Friday night. MacGregor is not far away. People will be responsible for their own breakfasts and we will provide lunches Saturday and Sunday.
The lodge we are staying in has a microwave, coffeemaker and medium size frig, but no sink or dishwashing capabilities. They have a dining building that is open 24 hours. We can use their dishes and utensils for breakfasts, but cannot use the kitchen stoves and other equipment. There is a frig in the dining building that we can use which is separate from the one in the commercial kitchen.
There is a fireplace in the lodge, They do have an outdoor fire ring as well. Bring your own camp chair and we’ll have a contest to see how many chairs we can get around the fireplace or fire ring.
Cost is estimated around $50-$75 for the weekend, depending on the number of people. The rooms are $60 for the weekend and can hold 8 people. If the rooms are full, that’s $7.50 per person for lodging for the weekend. Even at 4 people per room it is $15 for the weekend.
We usually have 6-8 rooms – women only, men only, snorers, light sleepers, couples, and a family room if we have families.
Dinner is $12. There will be food costs for lunches, pumpkins, apples and some other miscellaneous items.
I will need a non-refundable deposit of $25 by Tues Oct 18. Please send e-mail for address to mail check to.
