Join me for a short Intermediate level backpacking trip along the superior hiking trail. We will hike through George Crosby Manitou State Park and check out the Cascades waterfall along the Manitou river. We will go by the Caribou river and Caribou Falls and hike along the Cross River. During weekdays there are fewer people making it easy to find a campsite, and at this time of year the mosquitoes are easily manageable.
We will hike the Superior Hiking Trail from the George Crosby Manitou State park entrance to the Skou Rd Trailhead. It is about 21 miles total and we will leave cars at both end points. At the state park trailhead I assume a park permit will be required.
Sept 20 (Tues) – meet at Eckbeck Campground near Finland, MN at about 4 pm. This is a state forest campground that is on hwy 1 about 12 miles NW of the turnoff from hwy 61. It is not reservable and so I will arrive early to ensure we have a site. Another state forest campground at Finland will be backup but I doubt it will be necessary. This is a primitive campground with only water and vault toilets but in which we can park cars.
Sept 21 (Wed) – place a car at the Skou Rd trailhead and then drive back to George Manitou Crosby to start hiking by about 9 am. We will backpack about 11 miles northeast to the Sugarloaf Pond campsite.
Sept 22 (Thurs) – Break camp about 8 am and hike 11 miles to the Skou Rd trailhead. We will then retrieve our cars and return to the twin cities.
Prior to the trip we will arrange carpooling. I would like to meet with anyone that I have not hiked with before.
