This is a kayak camping trip to Lake Namakan in Voyageurs National Park. We will launch on the morning of August 11 from the Ash River Canoe and kayak launch. From there we will paddle to Junction Bay on Lake Namakan. We have that campsite for 1 night. August 12 we will break camp and move to Namakan NE campsite on Namakan Island for 2 nights. then we will spend the last night at Namakan South campsite. returning to Ash River on August 15. We will do day trips as the group decides. I hope to have a long day trip to the historic Kettle Falls Inn for their famous walleye, and to see the Falls. When you paddle to Kettle Falls, there is a point where you are in the US, but can look south to see Canada. Junction Bay and historic Hoist Bay are also points of interest..
Plan to drive up the day before and either camp or stay in a motel. the North Country Inn in Orr has rooms for $75 which serve 2 people and it has a nice dock for appetizers and sunset watching. Or you could choose to camp at a nearby campground.
Participants must have a kayak with at least 2 bullheads at least 14 feet long (the Equipment locker may be a source). They must have a spray skirt and be comfortable using it. They should be experienced at minimalist camping. Group members can decide to cook individually or pool their food for camping.
Participants must have basic kayak skills, must demonstrate and be comfortable with wet exits and an assisted rescue, both as the rescuer and rescuee. They must be able to paddle and stay in a group. There will be a number of opportunities to practice paddling, rescues and packing and paddling a loaded boat. We will also discuss kayak navigation. Participants will need a map, compass, safety gear, a PFD with a whistle. PFDs must be worn on the water. The trip coordinator will assess developing skills to be certain that people have the requisite skill to paddle on big water. I will hold various paddling opportunities and also direct participants toward paddling opportunities and low cost instruction, as needed.
Cost: gas, food, accommodations on July 15. and any needed gear Deposit is $19 for the campsite reservations.
