This annual trip started as a Climbers Only trip but with the spacious campsite and wide variety of things to do in the area we expanded it to all Rover campers that want to experience the area.
Activities are coordinated by participants – sometimes in advance of the trip, but often the day (or hour) before the activity begins. In addition to the Rock Climbing (Trad, Sport routes) & climber watchers you’ll be near: Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse monuments, The Mammoth Digs, Hot Springs, Devils Tower (2 hrs away) The 109 mile Mikelson Biking Trail (our camp is very near midway point of Mikelson). One can also find Jewel, Wind & Rushmore cave tours or visit nearby Spearfish Canyon or go Horseback Riding at a nearby Ranch. It’s common for folks to build in a visit to the city of Wall (think Wall Drug) and/or The Badlands National Park to take their Wildlife Loop on the way to or from Custer. Nearby towns that are worth a visit: Deadwood, Hill City, Sturgis, & others.
You’ll be very likely to encounter Buffalo, pronghorn, wild donkeys, and need more luck to find Mountain Goats, Rams, cougar…
We provide firewood and the group campsite (Stockade Lake Group Campsite) which as a large Pavilion Shelter that houses ~12 picnic tables and has electricity. The group camp has 2 clean vaulted toilets and we are allowed to use the flush toilets and shower facilities 1/4 mile away in the regular camping area.
You’re only asked to pay for the nights you stay. We divide the total we paid by the total number of ‘person-nights’ to calculate the cost per night then square up after the trip is over. That way folks who can only come for a night or two pay the same rate per night as people who stay longer. Duh! Past years the cost has been well under $10 per night.
To sign up, email Lori with the nights you expect to stay and she’ll reply with her Venmo handle so you can make the $50 deposit. Other arrangements can be made if you cannot use Venmo.
