Pop-up prairie seed collection – I can bring up 3 guests on my Three Rivers permit and there is a ton of good seed at Carver Park (in Victoria a couple miles past the Arboretum) just ready to pick. If more people show up, we can split into two groups and take turns being the hiking group and the collecting group. The fall colors are gorgeous at Carver right now and there are lots of New England asters blooming too.
We’ll meet at the Lowry Nature Center parking lot and hike about a 1/2 mile to the honey hole of seeds. I’ll show ya what I am looking for and how to collect it, then we’ll harvest for about 1.5 hrs and hike back to parking.
I’ll deliver all the seed to the Three Rivers greenhouse where natural resources staff will process it, make custom blends and overseed it into degraded or new prairies within the Three Rivers Park System next spring. Only 1% of Minnesota’s tallgrass prairies remain. Having a wide diversity of plants produces continuous bloom that is great for pollinators and the beauty and stability of these special prairie places.
